AHP Public Health

The HIOW AHP Public Health CEN is for AHPs interested in promoting a preventative approach to health care and addressing health inequalities. The CEN is chaired by Katrina Kennedy and Rachael Middle, HIOW AHPs who are also part of the national AHP public health strategy board. 

The aim of the CEN is to promote best practice in the area of public health in order to utilise our skills effectively to maximise the health of our local population. The CEN will focus on the sharing of local and national initiatives, resources, training opportunities and contribute to our work at an ICS level aiming to achieve the goals set out in the AHP public health strategic framework (see below for link).

The Greener AHP hub provides information on the importance of environmental sustainability for both population health and the health of the environment. There are also suggestions of how we can contribute in relation to our clinical practice, digital, food and diet we consume and how we use and recycle equipment we provide.

Clinical Lead initiatives

Ready-Step-Go
In response to this year’s NHS England reconditioning games #ReconditionTheNation, our AHP community has designed a new initiative called Ready-Step-Go. The idea came from one of our lead Podiatrists and it's centred around getting the foundations right to safely increase physical activity for those with frailty. The initiative takes individuals through several prompts, aimed at exploring the motivating factors to increasing physical activity, practical steps to consider and goal setting.  
We have designed a few simple resources to get everyone involved. These include:

Ready-Step-Go resources:

  • A poster that you can display in your health or care setting
  • A checklist that can be filled out by the individual or used as a conversation aid 
  • A personal pledge to summarise what the individual is committing to do, why and when.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Community Upskilling Programme 2023 
‘The Year of Readiness’

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Integrated Care System (HIOW ICS) are delighted to launch the community upskilling programme for 2023. This exciting opportunity is the result of funding awarded by Health Education England (HEE) to support the development of an education programme for community staff that meets local needs and where possible, delivered by local experts. 

The free training has been developed in collaboration with partners across the ICS and forms the building blocks of a sustainable interprofessional learning offer across the system.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy Workforce:

  • The occupational therapy workforce in the South East is experiencing increasingly challenged supply to meet increasing demand. 
  • Although supply routes are increasing in the region, it is not keeping up with the extra demand. More OTs are required across health and social care to enable care closer to home. 
  • Increasing turnover month on month post covid. SE systems all experiencing increasing occupational therapy vacancies.
  • An occupational therapy workforce summit in September 2022, hosted by the Royal College of Occupational Therapists identified the need for system leadership to optimise the OT workforce.

HIOW occupational therapy professional leads network:

  • The occupational therapy professional leadership network was established across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight in February 2023
  • The network includes 22 occupational therapy leaders, with representation from all provider services – health, social care and primary care. Meetings are held 6 weekly either on teams or face to face. See calendar for meeting dates. 
  • With the aim to ensure that Occupational Therapy across the ICS has a cohesive and dynamic professional leadership network. Working collaboratively to ensure the Occupational Therapy workforce can meet the growing and changing needs of local populations, enabling health and care services in Hampshire and Isle of Wight to deliver safe and effective patient care for today and the future.

Priority setting:

  • In March 2023, 15 Occupational Therapy leaders across the system came together  to identify opportunities to collaborate and support the growth of the Occupational Therapy workforce across HIOW ICS. These priorities have been pulled together under 2 themes – Job for life in HIOW and Clinical excellence and development.

Priorities for 23/24:

  • Career Mobility – supporting the development and retention of all occupational therapy staff within HIOW, by offering both rotational opportunities and career mobility across the system.
  • IE OT transition Programme – ensuring our internationally educated and recruited occupational therapists are given the support needed to transition to the UK and thrive in their roles.
  • Increasing visibility of occupational therapy as a profession - working alongside 350+ careers team to coproduce an offer schools and colleges across HIOW
  • 3rd year student recruitment – A systemwide collaborative approach to recruitment of newly qualified occupational therapists.
