On 30 November 2023, NHS Hampshire and Isle of Wight published details on proposals for consultation into how between £700 million and £900 million would best be invested in hospital services across the county.

Responding to requests a new event has been added on the weekend so that residents of Winchester can have their say regarding the new hospital proposals at a listening event. The new event is being held on Saturday 2 March at the Guildhall in Winchester. The details of the event are below:

Date: Saturday 2 March

Time: 2pm – 4pm

Location: Guildhall Winchester, The Broadway Winchester SO23 9GH

You can book your place here.

The event will start with a presentation followed by a Q&A session. There will then be break out groups to discuss the benefits, concerns, issues, and potential mitigations. Each group will be assisted by a facilitator and scribe.

Patients, local people, and NHS staff are being encouraged to get involved and give their views on the proposals which include:

  • building a brand new hospital on the current Basingstoke hospital site or near Junction 7 of the M3 for specialist and emergency care, such as strokes, heart attacks, trauma (treating life and limb threatening injuries), emergency surgery, obstetrician-led maternity care, and separate children’s emergency department.
  • significantly investing in the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester which would focus on planned operations and procedures, and provide a 24/7 doctor-led urgent treatment centre that would see and treat around 60% of the patients who currently go to Winchester A&E, same day emergency care services, and midwife led maternity services.
  • continuing to deliver day-to-day hospital services such as outpatients, diagnostics, and therapy services from the main hospital sites.

These proposals provide a once-in-a-generation opportunity to improve hospital facilities and hospital services and to provide the very best care for people who need it.

Dr Lara Alloway, Chief Medical Officer at NHS Hampshire and Isle of Wight said “We are delighted to be able to hold an additional event in Winchester in response to requests from local residents. We’re keen to hear from as many people as possible, in whichever way is most convenient – you can call us, send an email, or complete an online questionnaire. We’re also continuing to conduct one-to-one telephone surveys and focus groups with people across the area.

“We’ve made information available in a range of formats, including large print, Easy Read, factsheets, and summary documents, all of which are available on the consultation website, www.hampshiretogether.nhs.uk.”

The consultation document, which provides more detail on the proposals, is also available at www.hampshiretogether.nhs.uk.
